3 Speeding On Montauk Highway Cause 2 Crashes: Police

SOUTHAMPTON, NY —Three men from Brooklyn speeding in Southampton caused two crashes Sunday, police said. According to Southampton Town Police, at 9:51 p.m., a patrol officer saw three vehicles traveling west on Montauk Highway at a high rate of speed. The officer activated lights and sirens in an attempt to stop them, but all three drivers kept going, police said. Jean Charles, 22, who was driving a 2015 Infiniti, lost control of his vehicle at a curve, which caused him to strike a 2008 Infiniti driven by Jean Joseph, 19, police said. Charles continued off the roadway and struck a fence; he then fled on foot but was apprehended by the patrol officer, police said. Joseph and the other driver, Bertrand Philpson, 23, continued speeding west; Bertrand was later stopped on Sunrise Highway and apprehended, police said. Spike strips were deployed on Sunrise Highway which safely disabled Joseph's vehicle and he was taken into custody, police said. All three drivers were arrested and brought to Southampton Town Police headquarters for processing; due to New York State's bail reform the three were released with traffic summonses, each to return to court at a later date, police said.
