Description
Due to a life changing event, I am re-homing my Sulcata Tortoise (African Spurred Tortoise) named Cheeseburger. Healthy, female and approximately 10 months old. She is friendly and not a sprinkle of mean in her. Cheeseburger was purchased locally from a reputable source (NOT purchased from a pet store chain). Warning! Sulcata’s are land dwellers. They are not aquatic. If you put a Sulcata in water, it will drown. These tortoises live on land. Living Arrangements- Sulcata’s do well in Texas. They like the heat and sun and appreciate the humidity. Sulcata's usually live indoors and then are moved outdoors once they reach an appropriate size and weight. Cheeseburger will come with both an indoor and an outdoor daily summer home, all accessories and supplies. Both of the homes should be sufficient size for up to the next 5 years. An outdoor winter home is not being provided as she is not yet of age to live outdoors in the winter. Lifespan - Sulcata’s live up to 50-75+ years and weigh upwards of 100-125 lbs. They grow slowly. Females tend to be a bit smaller than males. Cheeseburger is 10 months old. She weighs 112 grams and fits in your hand. Diet - Due to the Sulcata’s lifespan, it is critically important diet restrictions are followed. Simply put, Sulcata’s live in Africa’s Sahara desert. Vegetables don’t grow naturally in the Sahara desert. At least 80% of the Sulcata’s diet are grasses and weeds, NOT vegetables. Additionally, grasses and weeds treated with fertilizer, pesticides, etc.. will kill her. You have to have a daily supply of grasses and weeds that are untreated. Size - Once they reach adult size, they can be difficult to keep outdoors (ESPECIALLY IN A YARD). They turn into mini bulldozers and tunnel dwellers. They will ruin any landscaping. Special fencing is required as they can tear down fences and dig under them in a matter of hours. Care - Prefer to be left alone and not housed with any other pets (other tortoises, cats, dogs, etc…). They don’t like to be petted, played with or carried around. Food and living arrangements can be costly as they age. Health - Biggest threats are inappropriate living/diet conditions leading to a shell that pyramids, attackers such as cats, dogs and fire ants and squishers like kids sitting/stepping on them. Otherwise Sulcatas don’t require vet visits, vaccinations, pet insurance, etc… Serious inquiries only. Please be ready for questions from me as I will be screening those that are interested to ensure Cheeseburger goes to someone that has the capability to provide a home. Re-homing fee of $350 that is firm.
