Hello and welcome to the gorgeous month of June. Summer! What a beautiful time of year where the days are longer, the sun shines brighter, and the serenity of the beach is all around us. How lucky are we to live on Long Island. It feels so good to gather with friends and family once again. Each first-Monday-of-the-month, I create a new Vlog on my YouTube Channel, Skylark Live, that is designed to inspire and motivate the 60 and beyond crowd to thrive in older age. It's a passion of mine that began when I was turning 60, and I love sharing my experiences and the things that keep me inspired and motivated. This month, my topic is Love the Skin You're In. So what does that mean? Learning to love the skin you're in means believing in yourself. This is mostly a mental exercise, and you are in control of what you choose to believe - focus on your positives and ignore outside influences that try to dictate how you should be or how you should look. Sounds easy, right? Well, it can be if you just understand that you are the only one who knows you best. You are the only one who knows what it means to live inside your body, so why not love the skin you're in. There are many ways to better ourselves and one of the most important is our attitude about ourselves. Until you truly love yourself, it's impossible to fully care and extend that warm glow of love to others. It starts with you. I've experienced self-doubt, too, but I've learned how to quiet that negative voice inside me because I know there's so much goodness, and I have discovered what self-love can do. It just makes you happier, and it makes everyone around you happier, too. Whatever term we choose to apply - Self esteem? Self confidence? Body image? - there's no doubt that at times, most of us don't feel as good or as comfortable with ourselves as we'd like to. You can learn to LOVE the skin you're in! Start now! A lack of body confidence is usually because we think other women are better - more attractive, slimmer, fitter. A survey shows that 40% of women are dissatisfied with the way they look which impacts on the way they behave. What a shame. You are uniquely you. There's no one like you, so love yourself. Who's to say how anyone should look? "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", and the most important person is YOU! Exercise is a great way to enhance self-esteem, and you look and feel better, too. I exercise every other day, and I do just about 20 minutes of core firming exercises that include plank (amazing), lunges, squats, marching in place, and yoga poses. These are great fat burners and firmers!!!! You don't have to join a gym. You can do these in the comfort of your own home, and you'll see results pretty quickly if you stick to it. Walking is also a great overall exercise and there's not much that is better for you than being in nature. Eating well helps as well. All of us can adopt some simple techniques and direct those negative thoughts into a more POSITIVE direction. Remember to meditate.
