Old laptop needed

I need a laptop, even 5 to 10 years old ('broken' ok!) to use for studying Linux. I can help you securely erase the disc, or I could help you fix your computer to run Linux (as practice, if you want to keep it). Prefer free but could pay $40 if 4G ram (maybe $60 if 8G).
