UNESCO is presenting acclaimed musician Bill Summer to the Kansas City area. UNESCO’s Creative City of Music project, in collaboration with the Traditional Music Society of Kansas City is proud to present famed percussionist and recording artist Bill Summers, in concert and in an Afro Cuban percussion master class. Mr. Summer is one of the worlds most sought after percussionist, having performed and toured with Herbie Hancock and the group Headhunters. Originally from Detroit Michigan, he now resides in New Orleans. His musical career spans more than 40 years, having collaborated with the likes of Quincy Jones in the scoring of the soundtracks for the films Roots and The Color Purple. He has also partnered with musicians such as jazz trumpeters Eddie Henderson and Irvin Mayfield and drummer Jason Marsalis, of the Marsalis brother’s fame. Bill has been involved in many prestigious musical projects, bands and recording endeavors. Aside from touring with the Headhunters group, his formation of the group Los Hombres Caliente has been one of his most prestigious endeavors. But just as important, Mr. Summers is steeped in the music of Cuba, having studied there intensely for many years and being one of the few American percussionist well versed in playing the sacred bata drums. He is also an expert in the secular rhythms from Cuba, which are associated with instruments such as the congas, bongos. Bells, shekere, etc. all of which have found their way into, jazz, Latin jazz, salsa, rhythm and blues and hip hop. Mr. Summers will make an appearance at the World Music Festival through a project called Voyage of the Drum, initiated by UNESCO. Kansas City Missouri has the distinct honor of being designated as the Creative City of Music for the United States. Mr. Summers will also offer his skills at an Afro Cuban Master Percussion Class while he is in KC.
