Description

DALLAS, TX —Saturday, Dallas voters went to the polls for a second time in as many months to determine who will be be seated for the next two years on the City Council. It now appears — according to tallies that are all but complete yet still unofficial — that incumbent David Blewett has lost his seat to rival Paul Ridley, a retired attorney. Otherwise, the voters appear to have reelected incumbents in District 4 — in Carolyn King Arnold, and in District 7 — with Adam Bazaldua. They will be joined on the council by Jesse Moreno, a restaurateur and the likely District 2 winner, Jaynie Schultz, a onetime member of the city's Plan Commission and the apparent winner in District 11 and Gay Donnell Willis, the chief exec of the Turtle Creek Conservancy, who will be seated in District 13 if the vote totals hold. The races cut a swath through the county, and across the strata of the city's socioeconomic makeup as well. Since no one candidate of those on Saturday's ballot cleared the 50 percent hurdle necessary on May 1 to win their elections outright, six seats were up for grabs in this weekend's runoff sweepstakes— including districts as disparate as northern from southern and central from east. Not only that, but half the campaigns included incumbents trying to hold onto their seats in the face of challenges from outside. Last month, the eight remaining incumbents all won their seats back in large enough margins that spared them from the sudden-death runoff round of politicking. Dallas Eric Johnson is currently in the middle of a four-year term, and thus did not appear on Saturday's ballot. It is Johnson who holds the 15th City Council seat. These are unofficial Results, according to the Texas Secretary of State's website and the Official Website of the Dallas County Elections Department.
