MURRIETA, CA — The annual Tour de Murrieta bike race is set for this weekend in Old Town, with a festival atmosphere, free spectator viewing, an exposition area, free energy drinks, music, and a popular kids' race.
While the June 5-6 event promises to be exciting for race fans, Saturday's Grand Prix course is closed to motor vehicles from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. (See attached map for Saturday's course.)
Sunday's Circuit Race is an open course, but the intersection of Washington Avenue and Ivy Street will be closed from about 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
"If you need to drive on the course on Sunday, pay particular attention to the map and clockwise direction of travel the bicyclists will be riding. Make sure you drive in the same clockwise pattern to avoid coming head-on with a bicyclist," the Murrieta Police Department advised. (See attached map for Sunday's course.)
All motorists are asked to avoid the Old Town Murrieta area this weekend if they don't plan to attend the race.
The USA Cycling sanctioned Tour de Murrieta was last held March 7-8, 2020, just before pandemic restrictions set in.
The presenting sponsor for this year's event is Old Town's Wine Ranch Grill & Cellars (which is celebrating its three-year anniversary on Washington Avenue this Saturday).
