Studying ear-training for jazz is the spiritual path to developing your own unique style and advancing musically. With me, you'll sing everything and make yourself do work you have either been scared of or struggled with. Using your instrument in conjunction with your voice, you will internalize intervals, compound intervals through the chord scale, and transcribed solos, in ways you never have before. You will sing motives and material that will enhance your jazz improvisation. This approach is focused on ear to hand skills - hearing an idea and being able to recreate it on the instrument (rather than the other way around, which is wrong!). It is also focused on development of a unique style for you, which you steer through the choices you make about what jazz vocabulary to focus on. All your daily warmups for the rest of your life will begin with singing, with instrument in-hand, and repeating the material on your horn or guitar! Imagine that - finally integrating your ears with a vocabulary with your horn. My background....1) I struggled in ear training 1 (40 years ago!) because the academic approach was unhelpful and I wasn't asked to sing the material, which is the way it really gets internalized! 2) over decades I - on my own and through study - solved my problems and - with the help of Berklee faculty - found a direction to turn ear-training into a path for developing a unique style. 3) I also have a college teaching background and advanced degree in performance on my instrument.
