Lake Katherine Nature Center and Botanic Gardens is an 85 acre restored natural refuge in the heart of the south west suburbs of Chicago. Lake Katherine Nature Center and Botanic Gardens mission is to connect people with nature. It has been over 25 years since the idea of Lake Katherine was born. Although there have been changes throughout this time, the central idea of having a community nature center has not. As we move forward, our goals remain focused on restoration of the site, public environmental education, inclusivity, outdoor recreation and to create a landscape where everyone can come to connect with nature. Lake Katherine is a place where you can get away from the ordinary, experience beauty, and marvel at wildlife. Expect to see many native and not native trees planted on site. The arboretum is full of different species ranging from sweet gum to native oaks to beeches. The children's forest (west of the lake) consists of wetlands, the schoolhouse arch, a salamander mound, a spider maze and more. Take a step back to relax by the shaded waterfall and hear the relaxing sounds that relaxes the mind. Make sure to stop to see species such as compass plant, bee balm and Indian grass, and take a look at the organic garden.
