NEW YORK CITY — A high-profile shooting in Times Square was part of a 73 percent surge gun violence over the course of May, according to NYPD crime statistics. Newly released crime statistics show crime overall rose 22 percent in New York City last month compared to the same span last year. Every crime category except burglary saw an increase or remained level, the data shows. The continued surge comes amid increased scrutiny on crime from mayoral candidates and Mayor Bill de Blasio's so-far-unfulfilled promises that his public safety efforts will pay off. "The recovery itself is helping us to make people safer," he said this week. "The investments we're putting in communities, Cure Violence, Crisis Management System, all of these things are going to add up, but you don't turn around the results of a global pandemic and a whole dislocation of our society, don't turn around overnight, but we are going to turn it around." Comparing May 2020 to this year isn't exactly apples to apples. The city is now in the midst of reopening, while last year the lockdowns were near their height. But, still, a wave of violence in the city has largely continued unabated for a solid year. There were 173 shooting incidents in May this year, compared to 100 the same month last year, according to data. Murders remained level at 37 for both months.
