HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The New York State Police issued 9,214 tickets statewide during their annual Memorial Day Weekend enforcement campaign to combat drunk and impaired driving. Drivers in the upper and lower Hudson Valley were particularly prone to illegal behaviors, which also included violating child safety laws, distracted driving, and failing to move over for emergency vehicles. The most speeding tickets — 759 — were written in the lower Hudson Valley. the most drunken driving arrests — 44 — were in the upper Hudson Valley. The upper Hudson Valley tied with Central New York for the most distracted driving tickets, and was second only to Western New York for violations of the child restraint/seat-belt laws. As for the move-over rule, no region came close to the number of violators ticketed in the lower Hudson Valley, not even the New York State Thruway. The enforcement period began May 28 and continued through Tuesday.
