Description

BEVERLY, MA — Beverly will host a Juneteenth flag-raising ceremony and celebration of Black history on June 16 to honor the day Texas slaves were freed following the Civil War. The city will host the event at 4 p.m. that will include the raising of the Juneteenth flag, a rendition of the Black national anthem and stories of Black history and the importance of the day. The North Shore Juneteenth Association is organizing the event in partnership with the Beverly Race Equity Task Force and Beverly Public Schools. The event is open to the public, but those not vaccinated are requested to wear masks. Juneteenth is recognized as the day slaves in Texas were freed when word of the Union's Civil War victory made it to Galveston two years after Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.
