LAKE COUNTY, IL — Lake County Sheriff's Deputies issued 134 citations during its recent Memorial Day traffic safety campaign, including 48 tickets for passengers or drivers who did not have their seat buckles on. In addition, deputies arrested two people for driving under the influence of alcohol and issued eight citations for driving with a suspended or revoked driver's license. Fifty-four tickets for speeding were also handed out. According to a Lake County Sheriff's Office news release, the Illinois' 2020 seat belt compliance rate was 94.6 percent. But unbelted occupants still account for over half of those killed in traffic crashes. The "Click It or Ticket" campaign aims to change the behavior of the millions of people who don't buckle up. Thousands of lives could be saved each year if every vehicle occupant was properly restrained when traveling, police said. The Illinois "Click It or Ticket" campaign is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation with federal highway safety funds.
