Press release from Dayton Public Schools: June 3, 2021 The district is offering a variety of educational opportunities for students this summer. In addition to DPS Summer Camps, the Challenger Learning Center will hold labs and camps of its own. The DPS Challenger Learning Center is among only 41 in the world. These centers were founded to continue the educational mission of the Challenger crew after the shuttle accident in 1986. Challenger Centers use space-themed simulated learning strategies to help students bring their classroom studies to life. In addition to the sciences, engineering and design, students learn problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills. Students can continue their learning this summer by participating in one of the following activities. For more information, please email [email protected]. Open (Green) House     Friday, June 25 6-8 p.m. $6/student Join CLC staff in celebrating the new Pollinator Garden. Students can go through different stations to learn about different pollinators and try fresh produce from the garden. Dinner will be provided. Be a Friend to Trees Tuesday, July 27 10-11:30 a.m. $10/student (ages 4-6) In this Tiny Tots lab, 4-to-6-year-olds will learn about different types of trees, how trees help people, and will even plant a tree of their own. Full of Hot Air Wednesday, July 28 1-4 p.m. $12/student (ages 7-15) In this three-hour lab, students will explore the properties of hot air balloons, make a model version, and learn about what it takes to get it off the ground. Back to School Camp August 9-13 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. $30/day Monday/Tuesday: The Seismic Seven Wednesday: Massively Epic Engineering Disasters Thursday/Friday: Star Challenger Moon Base Series Students will explore different books and the science behind them. At the end of the day, students will take home science projects and the books the projects are based on. Students can sign up for the full week or attend based on which books interest them.
