DUI Guilty Plea Lands Cobb Solicitor General 12 Month Probation

COBB COUNTY, GA — Barry Morgan, Cobb County's solicitor general, pleaded guilty Thursday morning to driving under the influence and failure to maintain lane, his attorney Kelsey Geary Wiley told Patch. He was sentenced to 12 months on probation, all the statutory requirements for a DUI and 24 hours jail time, but the jail time had already been served. He was booked into the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center the evening of March 11 and released the following day on a $2,211 bond. "Today was the very first opportunity Mr. Morgan had to enter a plea and he was eager to do so," Wiley said in an email Thursday. "He was given no special treatment or deference, nor did he seek any." Morgan, 66, was arrested and charged with DUI and weaving over a roadway around 11:30 p.m. March 11 in Cherokee County. A Cherokee County Sheriff's Office deputy pulled him over that night after noticing Morgan's car kept swerving out of the lane. Upon approaching Morgan, the deputy could "immediately smell an odor of alcohol," and Morgan confirmed he had been drinking at a bar in Pickens County. Morgan consented to field sobriety tests, where he "showed signs of impairment."
