Celebrate Freedom Day in the community with the Summit County Historical Society of Akron, OH, on Saturday, June 19th.
All events are free and open to the public. Please consider registering for the community picnic to assist us in ordering the correct amount of food catered by A Taste of Fine Dining with food tasting by Nicole's Restaurant and Irie Jamaican Kitchen.
Programming will begin at 10 a.m. under the tent with a Community Talk Back on Equality and Equity. Rev. Dr. David Nelson will be the moderator. Panelists include Carla Chapman, Leslie Parker Barnes, Pastor Robert DeJournett, Dr. Jennifer Ross and Pastor Kevin Rushing.
A community picnic will be hosted from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
"The Life of John Brown" by Reva Golden will be presented at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Deb Lemire is the narrator; Dennis Runkle portrays John Brown; Corin B Self is Frederick Douglass and Reva Golden brings Harriet Tubman to life.
Funding for the program is provided through an On the Table Grant from the Akron Community Foundation.
Founded in 1924, the mission of Summit County Historical Society, a 501(c)3 corporation, is to preserve and interpret the history of Summit County and Akron, and to educate regional communities about the people and events that have shaped our rich history.
