Description

Come learn the basic process of a simple moveable type lock-up and make your very own custom prints! Setting moveable type was one of the most revolutionary innovations of all time, making the book-making process and the dissemination of knowledge much more accessible. In this in-person workshop, students will work with wood or lead type to create their own unique messages, whether they be sayings, quotes, lyrics, or anything else! Students should come with a sentence or two (between 10-25 words or so) in mind to work with. We'll browse our extensive selection of types and fonts and use some simple practices to ensure your success in crafting your message. No experience is necessary. Bonus: you'll get much better at reading backwards! ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ COVID Restrictions: If you are vaccinated, you may work without a mask if you so choose. The class is taught by Thom Caraway, the designer and publisher for Rock & Sling and Trochaic Press. He has designed over 50 books and magazines, and teaches courses in editing, book design, and publishing at Whitworth University. He has been working in letterpress printing since 2016, and is a founder of the SPPC. SPPC is an immersive learning space dedicated to print, publishing, and creative play. We provide access to equipment, resources, and expertise to empower our students to execute their own print, book, writing, fabrication, and printing projects.
