Baby Groundhog Rescued From Storm Drain On Long Island

PORT JEFFERSON, NY — A baby groundhog was rescued by a group of firefighters from a storm drain in a residential area of Long Island on Wednesday. The groundhog fell into a storm drain on Brewster Drive early Wednesday evening, and it was not too long before the Port Jefferson Fire Department's Rescue 7 was on the scene to lend a helping hand, according to a video posted to the department's Facebook page later that night. Firefighters had to first remove the metal grate covering the drain, and then two of them climbed down inside to retrieve the youngster, which was nearly dwarfed by a firefighter's gloves as he carried it to safety. "Here he comes," said one firefighter as he raises the adorable critter, as others chime in unison, "awh." "Yay!" says an onlooker in the crowd. The firefighter then places the uninjured groundhog on the grass, but the animal hesitates, so he walks it over to a fenced area covered with some brush. Since the video has been posted, it has been viewed nearly 3,000 times. "Aww so adorable. Thanks PJFD!" writes one commenter. An another, "Sooo cute!" "Great job, Port Jefferson FD," writes another.
