23 Suspected Norovirus Cases Linked To Shoreline Habit Burger

SHORELINE, WA — King County public health officials are unsure what is behind a rash of suspected norovirus illnesses recently reported among nearly two dozen diners at a Shoreline Habit Burger location. Officials said 23 people from six unrelated groups reported getting sick after eating at the restaurant, on North 205th St., between May 21 and May 24. One person required hospitalization. Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that exhibits symptoms suddenly, often including nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The illness is rarely severe and typically clears up within a day or two, officials said. According to Public Health - Seattle & King County, the source of the outbreak was not immediately obvious, and the virus can spread through contaminated food items, surfaces, or between people. Outbreak investigators visited the restaurant on May 26 and reported no obvious risk factors. The most recent food safety inspection rated the location "excellent." Officials said the restaurant thoroughly cleaned and disinfected the premises after their first, and investigators returned May 28 to give staffers a refresher course on the best ways to minimize risks. Public health officials will revisit the restaurant within two weeks to ensure the proper practices remain in place.
