SMITHTOWN, NY — Two men from Huntington Station were found dead in the Long Island Sound on Wednesday morning.
Roberto Guevarra, 36, and Roberto Murillo, 60, were reported missing around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday after they failed to return from a fishing trip in the sound, police said.
The men had launched a canoe from Makamah Beach in Fort Salonga approximately 12 hours before they were found, police said. Their bodies were discovered near Eatons Neck around 6 a.m., police said.
Both men were wearing life jackets, News 12 reported. Coast Guard officials told News 12 what happened is tragic and is something they've seen often lately due to colder water temperatures.
Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau, Aviation Section and patrol officers, along with representatives from the Huntington Harbormaster, United States Coast Guard and multiple fire departments, all searched for Guevarra and Murillo.
Detectives asked anyone with information to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392.
