PLAINFIELD, IL — The Plainfield Police Department recently issued 178 citations in its Click It or Ticket campaign on Memorial Day.
The campaign, administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation, targets unbuckled drivers and passengers. Of Monday's total, 104 citations were issued for seat belt violations. The other included one child car seat violation, three for distracted driving, two for traffic-related arrests and five criminal-related arrests. Forty-four speeding tickets were also issued, including one to someone going 109 mph in a 45-mph zone.

In the Midwest specifically, 89.4 percent of drivers wear their seat belts.
Of the 22,215 people killed in car accidents in 2019, 47 percent weren't wearing seat belts, according to NHTSA. The administration estimated almost 2,500 lives could've been saved had people buckled up.
