MOUNT PROSPECT, IL — A 55-year-old pedestrian, who was crossing Elmhurst Road in his wheelchair, was struck by a hit-and-run driver Wednesday afternoon in Mount Prospect. Witnesses told police that the driver of a black Chevrolet did not stop after hitting the man at around 1:56 p.m. near the 1300 block of S Elmhurst Road. They said he continued driving southbound on Elmhurst Road with damage to his car's front end and windshield. The pedestrian, identified as Marc Giolli, of Mount Prospect, was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with serious injuries. The driver and his car were located by police in an apartment complex near Elmhurst Road and Oakton Street shortly after the crash. At this time, no citations or charges have been filed, as the investigation is still ongoing, according to a news release from police. A GoFundMe for Giolli has been set up by his niece, Tianna Tyler, who said he has spina bifida and is a paraplegic. GoFundMe is a Patch promotional partner. "As you can imagine, his daily life is already challenging," Tyler said in the GoFundMe post. "My uncle also battles depression and one thing that always helps him out of his slump is to enjoy the sunshine. We finally are having nice weather here in Chicago and he took a ride in his wheelchair." Tyler said Giolli, who is still hospitalized, has a broken pelvis and knee, shattered ribs and a punctured lung, and a deep head wound with internal brain bleeding. "He is such a caring person and always putting others before himself. Not to mention, he is also the biggest animal lover," Tyler said. "His heart is so big and he brings so much joy to our family. This will be a long road, as my uncle is also an amputee, so recovery and adjusting back to daily life will be a challenge to say the least." As of Thursday afternoon, $2,530 of a $50,000 goal has been raised. To donate and learn more about the GoFundMe, visit here. The Mount Prospect Police Department Major Crash Investigation Team is investigating this crash and were on the scene into Wednesday night. The southbound lanes of Elmhurst Road (Route 83) were shut down for a time.
