Hudson River Park Announces New Playground In Lower Manhattan

LOWER MANHATTAN, NY — Hudson River Park Friends, a nonprofit dedicated to the care and enhancement of the Lower Manhattan green space, announced that a new playground is possibly coming to Pier 26 in SoHo — not far from the West Village. It will be a marine science-focused play area, which will hopefully begin construction in 2022 and feature custom, interactive sculptural elements for children to learn, play, and be inspired by wildlife and the Hudson River habitat. The 4,000 square-foot playground will be designed by OLIN landscape architects, which is also the firm that designed the rest of Pier 26. The nonprofit is not fully ready to start the project, though, writing in an email that it needs to raise an additional $100,000 by October 7, 2021, to make the playground happen. Michael Novogratz, the Board Chair of Hudson River Park Friends, has pledged to match any donated funds. Hudson River Park runs four miles along Manhattan's west side, roughly from Chambers Street to 59th Street. Pier 26 is in the Tribeca portion of the park between Hubert and North Moore Streets.
