TUCSON, AZ — A 35-year-old man has been charged in connection with a fatal crash that killed an 8-year-old girl Wednesday night near downtown Tucson, Tucson police said.
Yarel Ruiz died in the crash, which occurred in the intersection of west Congress Street and south Grande Avenue after 9:30 p.m., according to police.
Brent William Youvella was charged with leaving the scene of a serious-injury or fatal collision on Thursday, police said.
Youvella's bond has not been posted, as of Thursday afternoon.
If convicted of the charge, Youvella faces a maximum of two years in prison.
Youvella's Chevrolet Camaro crashed into a Hyundai Sonata after traveling at a high rate of speed and running the red light at the intersection on westbound Congress Street, hitting the Sonata as it traveled north on Grande Avenue, police said.
Additional charges against Youvella are pending the result of an ongoing investigation, according to police.
