Led by Sue Van Hook, local mycologist, learn to gather, sort, and identify various types of fungi found on the Paran/Frost Trail. Introduction to Wild Mushrooms Foray Sunday, August 29, 2021, 10 -12 am Lake Paran, North Bennington, VT Sue Van Hook, local mycologist, will lead us into the woods to gather fungi that we will then sort and identify with her guidance. Participants will have a chance to develop their field skills in mushroom identification. Bring a basket or bag with stiff sides, a field knife or trowel, and a hand lens if you have one. Registration fee $10/ person, kids under 12 are free. Group size for the walk is limited to 35 so it is first paid, first on the list. Sue Van Hook is a mycologist, naturalist, teacher and healer. She has been studying the taxonomy and ecology of fungi for the past 45 years, having begun her coursework in the Pacific Northwest where the mushroom season lasts 9 months of the year. She completed her undergraduate and graduate degrees in botany and mycology at Humboldt State University under the tutelage of Dr. David L. Largent. For 18 years she taught biology and environmental science labs at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. While at Skidmore she served as a mycological consultant to Ecovative for the first three years before becoming the full time Mycologist at the company. In her retirement she consults and teaches about fungi.
