AC man to check freon levels

I have an old Alpine central AC outdoor unit. It may be low on freon. It uses the old R22 freon. Yeah yeah I know it's harmful to the environment and all that boo hoo 😭. I just want to know if my system is low on freon or if my problem points to something more serious like a compressor gone south or a bad run capacitor etc. You must have your own gear like the manifold and gauges.
