After Two Years, LI Military Moms See Hometown Heroes Banners Up

BABYLON, NY—After almost two years of efforts, two women from Long Island saw a passion project come to reality. Carolyn Mormino and Jeanine Walther, of North Babylon, had an idea to hang "Hometown Heroes Banners" around the Town of Babylon for families to commemorate past or active members of the U.S. Armed Forces. After a few ups and downs, the women—both mothers of service members—were able to see the banners erected this Memorial Day. "Was a long time coming, but we got it done," Mormino told Patch. "Town of Babylon and the Kiwanis worked their butt off to get these banners printed and hung for Memorial Day weekend. They will be up until Veterans Day," she explained, The banners are flying in North Babylon, West Babylon, Deer Park, Lindenhurst, Lindenhurst Village, Amityville, Wyandanch and Copiague. Applications for the next round of banners will begin in January 2022. Mormino had a banner made for her son, who in turn asked for one of his grandfather, Ronald S. Mormino. "My son is humble, he said 'Mom, please honor Papa.' My dad is a Korean War veteran— he was so grateful."
