Woman, 70, Evacuates Apartment Fire In Stratford: Officials

STRATFORD, CT — A 70-year-old woman safely evacuated an apartment fire Tuesday morning in Stratford, according to officials. Firefighters responded to 125 Arbor Street, Unit 6 around 11 a.m. on the report of a structure fire, according to Assistant Chief/Fire Marshal Robert Daniel. "Under the command of Assistant Chief Reitmeyer, Engines 1, 2, 4, Tac5 and Truck 1 responded with a total of 18 firefighters and one safety officer," Daniel wrote in a news release. "On arrival, smoke was visible coming from a first-floor living room window of the 600sq. foot apartment. The fire was contained to the room of origin and was under control in 10 minutes." The 70-year-old woman wasn't injured in the incident, according to Daniel. Daniel said the Stratford Housing Authority apartment "is not habitable at this time." The cause of the fire determined to be "accidental due to smoking while on oxygen therapy," according to Daniel.
