HARLEM, NY — A Harlem community group is one of 13 across New York that received a "Love Your Block" grant from the city last week, intended to help neighborhoods revitalize their public spaces. The Central Park North Block Association received the $1,000 grant, part of a program that helps resident-led groups "beautify their block and engage neighborhood volunteers to bring about social change." Now in its 12th year, the Love Your Block program has awarded $390,000 to 390 groups across the city. "Our community leaders are the resident experts of their neighborhoods, and I look forward to celebrating how they bring forth their unique visions of beautifying public, shared spaces for the benefit of their neighbors and our city," Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement. The Central Park North Block Association is based on the block above the park's northwest corner, between Frederick Douglass and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard, according to its website. In addition to the $1,000, recipients also get support from the city for trash collection, providing woodchip mulch for gardening, installing and repairing street signs, and more. The full list of 2021 Love Your Block Grantees can be found on the NYC Service website.
