Town Plans To Have Fourth Of July Fireworks

GREENWICH, CT — Last year, Fourth of July fireworks displays in Greenwich were canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But with eased restrictions, declining cases and increased vaccination rates, the shows will go on next month with a different look, according to First Selectman Fred Camillo. "We're going to go ahead with the fireworks, but we're not going to do them the same way we did them before," Camillo said on Wednesday during his weekly COVID-19 update. "We're not going to have Tod's Point and also Bruce Park at the same time in the same night. We're going to try and spread them out a little bit." Camillo said that official plans should be released very soon. Residents will be advised to socially distance at the displays when possible. "Some people say, 'Well, isn't it overkill now?' I don't think you can ever be too safe," Camillo added. "We're not completely to the other side of [the pandemic]." The fireworks are one of the most highly anticipated events in Greenwich throughout the year, and Camillo wants to make sure residents have the chance to experience the summer tradition in 2021. "To have these events and not to have people lose another summer... The fact that we have a vaccine and there's warm weather and most people have done the right thing, I think it's good," Camillo said. "We'll continue to tell people to bring a mask with them for those instances where they can't keep.a distance or where someone may not be comfortable. We want people to get out of the house and enjoy the summer."
