Princeton University Bomb Threat: Canadian Teen Pleads Guilty

PRINCETON, NJ — A Canadian teen who called in a bomb threat to Princeton University in September 2020 pleaded guilty in Mercer County Family Court, Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri said Tuesday. The 16-year-old male, whose name is being withheld as he is a juvenile, entered a guilty plea to one count of third-degree false public alarm on May 28. He was sentenced to a probationary term of two years, 30 hours of community service and a $2,000 fine, Onofri said. The teen also has to surrender his driver's license for six months, and undergo a psychological evaluation, and follow any recommendations made post evaluation, said Onofri. On Sep. 19 last year, Princeton University received a phone call reporting that improvised explosive devices were placed at several locations on campus, including the Art Museum, Firestone Library, Nassau Hall, and the Chapel. Students, faculty and staff were told to collect personal items, including car keys, and to leave their door unlocked and open to allow the area to be inspected. They were also told to go to their building's designated evacuation assembly area. No explosive devices were found. Law enforcement agencies from across the country and Canada participated in an extensive investigation of this incident. The investigation led to the identification of the teen suspect and a warrant was issued for his arrest, Onofri said. The teen was taken into custody in Louisiana on March 24, by the local sheriff's department.
