SANDOWN, NH — Money is being raised for the widow and the daughter of a man killed on a hiking expedition in the White Mountains last week. Edward Murphy of Sandown was killed when a tree fell on him while he was sleeping in a hammock. He was 50. Murphy was in the process of attempting to climb all of the 48 4,000 footers in New Hampshire. He had finished 39. "After posting his final photograph on social media from the peak, he hiked 12 miles to the Spruce Brook Tent Site," said Jake Cross, the organizer of the GoFundMe.com fundraiser. "When he got there, it was dark and he couldn't see that the spruce tree he connected his hammock tent to was dying. When he was in bed for the night the tree uprooted and crashed on him killing him instantly." The money will be used to assist his teenage daughter, who dreams of becoming a nurse, to attend college. The fundraiser hopes to raise $50,000. A little less than $14,000 was raised 24 hours after the effort was started.
