Each year, the World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes individuals or organizations for their accomplishments in the area of tobacco control. "Our community takes pride in the commitment to protect our own health and the health of our shared environment," stated Mayor Suzanne Hadley. "We especially seek to eliminate the use of tobacco and vape products among our youth. We are honored as a city to be recognized with this prestigious award by the World Health Organization." As of 2021, only two jurisdictions in the entire United States of America prohibit the sale of all tobacco. Of the bold initiatives, the WHO stated, "The California cities of Beverly Hills and Manhattan Beach shared the award for their ban on the sale of tobacco products. Their actions serve as proof of concept for Project Sunset, a global effort to phase out sale of commercial combustible tobacco products, including alternative nicotine delivery systems. California has since set a goal of eliminating tobacco use by 2035. Through this initiative, Beverly Hills and Manhattan Beach are going one step beyond established measures to mitigate and reduce consumption of tobacco." May 31 is World No Tobacco Day. This yearly celebration informs the public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco companies, what WHO is doing to fight the tobacco epidemic and what people around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy living and to protect future generations.
