Father, Son, Family Dog Escape Southampton House Fire

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — Firefighters battled a large blaze at a house in Southampton Wednesday evening. According to Chris Brenner, public information officer for the Southampton Fire Department, the call came in at 6:35 p.m. about a fire at a home on North Main Street. A father and his teenage son were home in the kitchen area when they saw and smelled smoke, Brenner said. "They opened the basement door, saw more smoke, and exited the house with the family dog," Brenner said. "They got out unscathed, with no injuries and no smoke inhalation." The fire, which was contained to the basement, was extinguished quickly, with just a lot of smoke throughout the house but no major damage, Brenner said. Southampton Fire Chief Alfred Callahan was in charge of the scene. About 50 firefighters responded from the Southampton Fire Department, as well as from the North Sea Fire Department and Bridgehampton Fire Departments, which provided mutual aid, Brenner said. Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance was also present to assess firefighters. The fire was mostly knocked down by 7:40 p.m., officials said.
