Description

Learn how to make and use different kinds of herbal infused medicines in this introductory workshop. Traditional herbal medicine preparations go by many names - tincture, decoction, oxymel, infusion, glycerite, but what do they all mean? And why is each one used? Join Annie-Sophie to learn about making effective, safe, and powerfully healing medicinal preparations incorporating fresh and dried plants straight from the garden. We will discuss how to make and work with the following preparations: tinctures, teas, oils, vinegars, oxymels, and glycerites. We will craft a few distinct blends from our gorgeous living library of 300+ medicinal plant species from around the world, as well as sample some herbal medicines from our apothecary. We will also discuss how to incorporate these herbal infusions as supplements for a healthier lifestyle for mind, body, and spirit. Bring paper and writing utensils to take notes, as well as pruners if you have them and a harvest basket or bag... there is an abundance of mints to share! Three reduced-price scholarship tickets are available for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color), until maximum attendance is reached. Email [email protected] to claim one! **Note: Dress in layers for the weather/insects and bring a refillable water bottle. Masks covering mouth and nose are required onsite when using the indoor restroom or washing facilities, and when unable to physically distance from others outdoors, according to mutual comfort level. Potted seedlings, divisions, and seeds are available for donation at all our public events, as well as printed or recorded publications from Jim and Peggy Duke. We are also accepting donations of Any size glass jar, clean or no, lid or not, as well as any size plant pots. Thank you & we look forward to seeing you in the garden! Located in Fulton, Maryland, The Green Farmacy Garden is a sanctuary for approximately 300 native and non-native species of plants that have been used traditionally and/or researched for medicinal applications. USDA botanist James A. Duke, PhD, and his wife, Peggy, collected medicinal plants for over sixty years.  In 1997, they transformed part of their pasture land into a teaching garden highlighting the plants that are featured in Jim’s book, The Green Pharmacy. The Green Farmacy Garden is also a part of the United Plant Savers network of sanctuaries around the country, which strive to educate the public and maintain native plant species that have become at risk or endangered. Since the garden is located on a large parcel of land, we are always in need of volunteers to help. We are also receptive to students who wish to work on independent projects with medicinal plants. Tours to the public are on scheduled days or by appointment.
