The Garden City nine have played some solid baseball this season, exhibiting good fundamentals, excellent pitching and clutch hitting that have combined to give them an 8-3 record with five games remaining in the regular season. The Memorial Day game at Community Park may have been their best of the season, shutting out previously undefeated Calhoun 3-0. Frank Santeramo went the distance, limiting a powerful Calhoun lineup to just 3 hits while striking out nine. When Calhoun thought they could get something started, the GC infield had other things in mind by turning two key double plays to erase base runners. In the middle of both was freshman sensation Jack Fanning, who has shown remarkable range, a strong arm and natural instincts at the shortstop position. He's not too bad at the plate either, as he chipped in with two hits and a run scored. The key hit of the game was a run scoring double off the bat of Pat Heber, delivering the game winning run. Heber drove the ball into the right field corner and only a wet turf prevented Joey Wood from scoring with the second run. But Wood didn't remain on third long as Santeramo followed with a clutch two run single to drive him and Heber in to score in the three run third inning. The three runs held up as Santeramo worked with catcher Joe Infante to keep the Colts offense off balance by mixing a lively fastball with good off-speed pitches.
