Description

The Confess Project: America’s First Mental Health Barbershop Movement Approximately 1 in 6 Floridians struggle with mental health conditions, including mental health and substance abuse disorders. 1 in 10 African Americans struggle with depression. On Sunday, June 27, 2021, The Mental Health Council of the Big Bend, City of Tallahassee, and The Confess Project will be teaming up to address Black mental health. We are calling all barbers and barber students to partake in the Mental Health Barbershop Movement. At this event, we are training Black barbers to become mental health advocates in their communities. African Americans use mental health services at half the rate of their white counterparts despite having elevated rates of mental health conditions. The Mental Health Council of the Big Bend is the only entity in Leon County comprised of mental health subject matter experts, dedicated assessing mental health services in Florida’s Big Bend region. The Confess Project is a national grassroots movement committed to building a culture of mental health for boys, men of color, and their families.
