DALLAS, TX —In 2019 B.C. (Before COVID) and as far back as anyone can remember, the thing that made a Texas summer survivable was the certainly that you were never more than 10 minutes from a pool where you could submerge yourself up to your nostrils until somewhere between Labor Day and fall. Now that the coronavirus has turned the world upside down, inside out and seemed to stop time in its tracks for a year, a new date is appearing that will offer weather-weary water lovers some respite: Juneteenth. Yes, you can now add swimming to the reasons we're happy to see that date on the calendar roll around. A handful of Dallas swim spots opened over the Memorial Day weekend, but the rest are playing a conservative game in terms of public health. All three Cove Aquatic Centers (Samuell Grand, Crawford and Fretz) have begun weekend service, but they transition to a full-time schedule June 19th. Saturday, Red Bird's Bahama Beach water park reopened and will keep to weekend hourss until daily swims resume June 22. They too have COVID-19 safety protocols in place. Around the city, such neighborhood aquatic centers as Tietze, Harry Stone and Exline Harry Stone plan for weekend hours on June 5, then open for regular business beginning Juneteenth. Lake Highlands North and Kidd Springs Aquatic Centers are following a similar plan. Meanwhile, swimming pools in Dallas open for regular business on June 19 as well. These pools include Tommie Allen, Everglade, Glendale, Grauwyler, Walnut Hill, Pleasant Oaks, Bonnie View, Martin Weiss and Jaycee Zaragoza.
