Crystal clear and powerful IZO Bacanora wins the top spot at oldest spirits competition in the US SAN DIEGO, Calif. - DATE - IZO Bacanora has been awarded as Best in Category Sotol/Bacanora/Comiteca at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition April 2021. The San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC) is an annual judging of over 3,000 different spirits. Dating back to the 1980, it is the oldest spirits competition in the US, and the second oldest in the world. Judged by the world’s leading spirits experts, and covering a breadth of spirits, it has an unrivaled reputation for quality and taste. And this year IZO Bacanora excelled as their best in category for that very quality and taste. Produced in Sonora, Mexico, IZO Bacanora is double distilled in copper and stainless steel. Aromas of desert minerals delicately combine with smoky tones of anise, apple, and pepper to produce a full-bodied, yet delicately smooth finish. The distillery’s official tasting notes describe the IZO Bacanora as robust and aggressive, exhibiting bold smoke with vibrant pops of lime and fresh black pepper and a lingering smoke. It was these potent and delicious sensual smells and tastes that won the judges over. “We are delighted that the judges at San Francisco World Spirits Competition awarded the IZO Bacanora such a prestigious award. We focus on bringing flavoursome, good quality agave spirits to the world, and are thrilled at the recognition,” says Founder, Gaston Martinez. As an outstanding spirit showing refinement, finesse, and complexity, IZO Bacanora is developed under the watchful eye of Master Mezcalero Jose Gonzalez in the tradition of founder Gaston Martinez. It’s all part of the distillery’s bid to bring traditionally crafted, premium agave spirits to the world. Bacanora has a history going back over 300 years. Native to the state of Sonora, Mexico, it is produced from Agave Pacifica (aka Agave Yaquiana) plants. Roasted and cooked in underground pits, the agave pinas, which take up to 12 years to grow, have a distinctive flavour and taste that is earthy, peppery and complex - a winning combination.Like Tequila and mezcal, it's produced from agave, but was illegal until 1992 and can only be distilled in Sonora. The 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition was held at One Market Restaurant in San Francisco from April 1st through April 20th. This year was record-breaking, with over 3,500 entries from all corners of the world. And the judges recognized that superior quality and taste meet in the award winning IZO Bacanora. # # # About IZO Spirits: Founded by Gaston Martinez - a native of Durango, Mexico - IZO Spirits is a collection of premium, handcrafted agave spirits produced sustainably right in the heart of his rural hometown according to centuries of tradition.
