From Anchorage Chamber of Commerce: June 1, 2021 ANCHORAGE, Alaska – During the 2021 Anchorage Remembers: Memorial Day Ceremony on May 31, the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) Military & Veterans Affairs Commission recognized George Vakalis as a veteran who has offered exceptional and long-standing volunteer service in support of military members and their families who live and work in the Anchorage area. Vakalis was recognized in large part for leading the Military Committee of the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce (ACC), and for developing the chamber's annual Military Appreciation Week activities. These include a luncheon featuring enlisted military members as guests of honor, and a picnic for military families held on Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson. Vakalis also initiated the bowl-a-thon fund-raiser that underwrites the week's activities, and he encouraged local businesses to offer military discounts. The veteran volunteer recognition award has become an annual Memorial Day tradition that began in 2016, George Vakalis joins six others who have demonstrated stellar service to assist, recognize and honor fellow veterans, military members, their families and supporters. Details of the 2021 award recipient and names of previous recipients are included in the attached Special Recognition fact sheet.
