My understanding is there is a degree of illegality keeping desert tortoises, therefore I wont speak directly other than to say I know someone whom is due to become overwhelmed. There are 5 young tortoises that need rehoming. They will be given free to excellent homes. Keep in mind this is a huge responsibility. These tortoises will out live a human generation and therefore a multigenerational family would be ideal. You can take multiple tortoises but keep in mind once they reach a breeding age males and females need to be separated in order to prevent a viscous cycle of baby tortoises. Even the males will fight as adults.
