Description

WAKEFIELD, MA — Two additional flags will be flying in town during June. The Pride flag will be flying all month, except for June 14-21, when the Juneteenth flag will be flown. The Pride flag will be raised during an event Tuesday at 6 p.m. in front of the Americal Civic Center on Main Street. June is Pride month throughout the country. This will be the third annual Pride flag raising in Wakefield. Information on a Juneteenth event will come later this month. Juneteenth recognizes the end of slavery in America. It observes the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas were told of their freedom, essentially ending slavery in America. It was more than two years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and a few months before the 13th amendment, which abolished slavery, was ratified. Juneteenth became a state holiday last month.
