By Editor, Times of San Diego May 30, 2021 San Diego, and most of California, lagged far behind in an online analysis of 2021's Best Places for Summer Jobs, but there's hope if you can pop over to Arizona for the season. San Diego came in 139th among the 182 cities on finance website WalletHub's list. Other parts of the county didn't fare much better – Oceanside placed 144th, while Chula Vista came in at No. 156. Los Angeles and Long Beach finished in the bottom 10. California, in fact, doesn't make an appearance until Huntington Beach steps in at No. 58. Arizona, though, finished on top, and had four slots in the top 25. Scottsdale hold the No. 1 spot, followed by Tempe, Chandler and Glendale. Following Scottsdale to round out the top 5 are: Bismarck, ND; Cheyenne, Wyo.; Billings, Mont., and Salt Lake City. New York City came in last. During the pandemic, the leisure and hospitality sectors were among the hardest hit because of required lockdowns. With summer nearly here though, as advances continue against COVID-19, entertainment and tourism sites that faced restrictions are rebounding, with 331,000 jobs added in April. Job openings in those fields tend to rise in summer, prompting WalletHub to compare more than 180 markets in the U.S. across 23 metrics. The data set included the median income of part-time workers, availability of summer jobs and local numbers of COVID-19 cases. Analysts used data from public and private sources, including the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Department of Housing and Urban Development. ManpowerGroup, Council for Community and Economic Research and Indeed.com. Times of San Diego is an independent online news site covering the San Diego metropolitan area.
