CALIFORNIA — Since the California Highway Patrol began its ramped up enforcement period on Friday night, more than 600 arrests have been made as of Sunday over the Memorial Day Weekend, officials said. All 600-plus people who were arrested were taken into custody for impaired driving or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The CHP has yet to announce any additional arrests made Sunday night or Monday. "Always ensure you have a designated, sober driver before you head out," CHP officials tweeted on Sunday morning. Memorial Day weekend typically kicks off vacations for many in the Golden State. With so many drivers hitting the road over the weekend, the CHP reminded residents to buckle up and drive safely last week. The agency began a Maximum Enforcement Period Friday at 6 p.m., which will end at 11:59 p.m. on Monday. Through Monday night, officers will be scanning for distracted drivers or those impaired by drugs or alcohol, the CHP said in a statement. Last year during the same weekend, 78 percent of Californians who were killed in a crash were not wearing a seatbelt. Across the state, 31 people died in crashes during that holiday weekend. Officers said they also arrested 854 motorists during the 78-hour enforcement period last year.
