On Friday, the LA Sparks came into Chicago without a win. The Sky, meanwhile had lost two in a row at home and were looking at the Sparks as the ideal team to stop the losing. Unfortunately, it didn't work out as planned. The Sparks beat the Sky 76-61 in the first of their two games over the weekend. It was a pretty close game at halftime, with the Sparks holding only a five point lead. The third quarter proved brutal for the Sky, as they were outscored 23-10. Diamond DeShields led the Sky with 14 points. Ruthy Hebard added 12 and Kahleah Copper had 11 to round out the double-digit scorers for the Sky. Candace Parker and Allie Quigley did not play due to lingering injuries. The Sparks held a big advantage in three stats categories. In three point shots, the Sparks were 9/19, while the Sky was only 3/19. The Sky committed 27 turnovers compared to only 19 for the Sparks. Steals also went to the Sparks 13-7. Sunday's game was much closer, but the Sky came up short in the 82-79 overtime loss. With all due respect to LA, the Sky should have won this game in regulation, but sloppy play late and into the OT cost the team. The Sky got out to a good start, leading 27-13 at the end of the first quarter. Just when it looked like the losing streak would end, the Sparks came back to outscore the Sky 24-10 in the second. The second half was a battle, which at times seemed like nobody wanted to win. Several turnovers, defensive lapses, fouls and extra long replay reviews turned an interesting game into a tedious ball of frustration, which would have been more tolerable had the Sky come out on top. Courtney Vandersloot led the team with 28 points and added seven assists, too. Ruthy Hebard had 12 and Kahleah Copper had 11 to account for the double-digit scorers. The Sky stand at 2-4 now. On Tuesday, they host the Phoenix Mercury who are 3-3. It's too early to call this a must win game, but it is a very important one.
