Drag has been a developing and influential culture for more than 150 years in the American landscape. Most people recognize drag to embody male actors impersonating female characters with exaggerated dress, makeup, and personas. Drag has evolved to include all genders engaging in performance and advocacy. Drag culture developed amongst enslaved and formerly enslaved men, notably William Dorsey Swann, who hosted Drag Balls to provide a safe space for people to come together and connect – a community that provided safety in numbers. Drag has a rich history of disenfranchisement and abuse that can be traced through blackface minstrel shows to Vaudeville, ultimately leading the community to advocate for their humanity, legitimacy, and visibility alongside LGBTQ activists. In the evolution of drag, many drag Queens and Kings came to provide homes for youths in their communities who didn’t have supportive homes. These Moms and Dads make sure that the youth in their communities are sheltered and provided for by tapping the resources of their vast and influential networks.
