WESTERN SPRINGS, IL — The United States and Illinois saw increases in coronavirus rates of less than 1 percent in the last week. Such was the case with most suburbs. But not Western Springs. As of Sunday, Western Springs had 1,302 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 41 from a week earlier, or a 3.3 percent hike, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. Darien, with a population more than 50 percent larger than that of Western Springs, saw eight new coronavirus cases in the last week. The week before, the village experienced a 2.8 percent increase. The number of Western Springs' virus-related deaths stayed the same in last week, at five. The latest deaths were reported May 11 and Nov. 21, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. That's a mortality rate of less than 1 percent. All the local deaths have been those who were 58 or older, according to the county medical examiner.
