Discover the bugs that in habit the land, forests, grasslands and wetlands of Richfield Heritage Preserve. This Bug Discovery Walk will be about a mile and a half and appropriate for all ages. Participants will learn to: * Observe bug behavior * Learn how many legs true bugs have. * Identify the parts of the insect: head, abdomen, and thorax. * Why bees and butterflies are important! Bugs (aka Insects) create the biological foundation for all terrestrial (land) ecosystems. They cycle nutrients, pollinate plants, disperse seeds, maintain soil structure and fertility, control populations of other organisms, and provide a major food source for other animals.  Nets will be provided during this event.  The bug walk will be co-led by Dr. Andrew Merwin of Baldwin Wallace University, two BWU research assistants Anthony Bogar and Ashley Larsen, as well as Dr. Meredith Steck of Case Western Reserve University.  ABOUT THE EXPERTS: Dr. Andrew Merwin is an Assistant Professor of Biology at BWU teaches ecology, zoology and invertebrate natural history. Dr. Meredith Steck will be a Lecturer of English at Case Western Reserve University in the fall. Both have a passion for nature and, specifically, critters with six legs.
