Description

Featuring local author, David Norec and his book, "The Adventures of Exo and Cy" The StoryWalk Program is an outdoor reading experience whereby a children’s book is deconstructed, and the pages of the book are printed on larger material to be placed on a stake or kiosk along a walking trail. Our first StoryWalk program was developed through a partnership between the South Texas Literacy Coalition, Harlingen Public Library, City of Harlingen and local children's author, David Norec. StoryWalks foster literacy, physical activity and healthy living as they encourage individuals and families to engage the outdoors while reading. Along with the health benefits of walking, there are many mental health benefits to being outside. The activities supported by the StoryWalk help foster discussions, creativity, discovery and comprehension skills. The grand opening of the Harlingen Story walk will begin with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, July 10th at 10am, followed by a FREE community book distribution until 12pm! Also featured at the event will be a line up of local authors set up in booths along the trail! The South Texas Literacy Coalition (STLC) distributes yearly more than 60,000 new free books to families throughout the Rio Grande Valley, presents free financial literacy workshops, coordinates book festivals, and hosts the yearly Literacy Symposium for teachers, librarians, and daycare facility staff in order to enhance the quality of life of our region with literacy outreach.
