Elderly South End Man Charged With Murder In Concord

CONCORD, NH — An elderly Concord man has been charged with murdering his wife and assaulting another woman after a slaying on South Spring Street on Friday. Philip Couture, 77, was arrested and charged with single counts of second-degree murder, for knowingly causing the death of his wife, Marlene Couture, 78, and second-degree murder, "for recklessly causing her death under circumstances manifesting an extreme indifference to the value of human life, by assaulting her," according to Kate Giaquinto, the director of communications for the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office. Philip Couture was also charged with a single count of second-degree assault for strangling a woman inside of the home. "This individual has been treated for her injuries and released," she said. Police and firefighters were sent to the home around 1:45 p.m. after a woman called 911 to report her mother dead inside of a bedroom. The woman told dispatch that her father, who had dementia, admitted to killing the woman and then barricaded himself inside a room. The first responding officer reported the man was covered in blood and requested EMTs to assist. An officer found the woman and secured the home while firefighters declared her dead. Concord police were still processing the scene early Saturday morning.
